How answers work
How the assistant finds an answer, shows its sources and handles questions your pages don't cover.
The assistant is instructed to answer only from your indexed pages, not from the wider web or general knowledge. Like any AI model it can still get things wrong, so check answers for important topics in the preview.
From question to answer
When a visitor asks something, we search your indexed pages for the passages that best match the question. The best 4 passages are passed to the AI model, usually no more than 2 from the same page, so answers can draw on several pages. The model writes a reply using only those passages.
Follow-up questions work. The assistant sees the last few messages of the conversation, so "how much does that cost?" makes sense after a question about a product.
Questions can be up to 1,000 characters.
Sources
Every answer lists the pages that were searched to write it under Sources. Visitors can click through to read the full page. We count those clicks in analytics.
When your pages don't have the answer
If your pages don't cover the question, the assistant is told to say so and suggest what to search for instead. When nothing on your site matches at all, visitors see:
I couldn't find anything about that in this documentation. Try rephrasing your question or using different keywords.
These questions are marked Unanswered and appear under Content gaps in analytics. Add the missing information to your site, re-crawl, and the assistant can answer it.
Languages
The assistant replies in the language of the question, even when your pages are in another language. Search works best when your pages are in English.
Conversations
A conversation lasts for one page view. If a visitor reloads or moves to another page, the chat starts fresh.
Where it runs
Everything runs on Cloudflare: Workers AI for the model, Vectorize for search and D1 for storage. No other AI provider sees your content.
